Webhaven International would like to extend the warmest of thanks to the guys that attended this years User Conference. The meeting was just incredible, really amazing.
We worked on YakityChat, a new open source chat server. We installed Pike 7.8 on OS X and got Fins running.
It was great that the Fins developer was able to assist in explaining the MVC paradigm and we built a Fins application in only 30minutes - just amazing.
It looks like there are more projects in the pipeline - we are very excited about the future for Webhaven, our friends and clients.
See you next year!
Welcome to all the attendees at the annual Webhaven conference.
We started today discussing software direction, features needing finishing for the RC chat software and preparing presentation notes, etc etc.
Tshirts have shipped, however they will not arrive until Friday, just in time for Open Source Days field trip.
Webhaven is proud to be involved with the Open Source Days - Community day in Copenhagen. We are working as a contributor for the event and excited to announce guests flying in from Berlin & USA to support the Pike stand and present talks on Pike projects.
Fins is a modern web application framework written in Pike. Fins uses the MVC design architecture, and thus is similar to Ruby on Rails.
Basically, this means that Fins is a toolkit for developing web applications (as opposed to simpler CGI scripts and such.) The MVC approach to software design splits an application into 3 sections, or areas of responsibility: the data model, event handling and coordination, and the user interface. In addition to using the MVC paradigm, Fins employs a "convention over configuration" approach, which means that if you follow a few simple patterns when developing your application, Fins will do a lot of the hard work for you.
If you're a Pike developer whose needs have moved beyond simple web scripts, Fins may be just the ticket for you. Similarly, if you're a Java (or C/C++ developer, even) who prefers a C/Java-like syntax but is frustrated by the amount of effort it takes to get simple tasks done (XML configuration files, anyone?), you should consider Pike and Fins. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised how much more efficient (and fun) working with Fins can be.

By implementing a new protocol in Pike and building plug and play modules for Roxen WebServer, and providing an entry level Javascript client, we have created a Release Candidate for general download. (available 24th October 2009)
Our methods are innovative, leveraging off often overlooked features in HTTP and using javascript with document object model objects & js GUI frameworks. Come and see how this project could help create a small footprint chat system for your environment.
